Kingfisher Boats Launches 670 Catamaran Tūtaia for Waikato Regional Council
We’re proud to announce the launch of the Waikato Regional Council’s newest harbour master vessel, Tūtaia, a 6.7-metre power catamaran designed and constructed by Kingfisher Boats. This vessel marks a significant upgrade in the council’s capability to maintain navigational aids, ensure boating safety, and extend patrolling coverage throughout the Waikato region.
Launch Ceremony in Whitianga
The Tūtaia was officially launched at a ceremony in Whitianga, blessed by iwi Ngāti Hei, who named the vessel after the renowned chief Te Paerata Toa Tūtaia. The blessing highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the name, which symbolizes safety and vigilance — fitting attributes for a vessel that will be patrolling the waters and supporting marine operations.
A Purpose-Built Vessel for Enhanced Maritime Operations
The catamaran replaces the council’s 17-year-old vessel Maroro and was developed under the council’s Long-Term Plan to improve maritime services. The Tūtaia features several custom enhancements tailored to meet the unique needs of the maritime services team:
- Stability and Versatility: As a catamaran, Tūtaia offers superior stability, making it suitable for a wider range of weather conditions. This allows the council’s maritime team to operate effectively year-round, even in challenging conditions.
- Lifting Capability: Equipped with a davit capable of lifting up to 250kg, the vessel is ideal for servicing the network of over 800 navigational aids deployed in the region’s waters. The stable platform and lifting capacity enhance both safety and efficiency in managing these critical aids.
- Modern Navigation Systems: The vessel is outfitted with advanced navigational equipment, including radar and dual chart plotters, ensuring precise and safe maneuvering throughout the region.
Performance and Capacity
The Tūtaia is powered by twin 140 hp Suzuki engines, offering a top speed of 40 knots (74 km/h) and a comfortable cruising speed of 22 knots. With a capacity to carry up to 10 people, the vessel can support various operations, from patrolling to transporting council environmental specialists and inter-agency teams like police divers. Its fuel capacity will enable the council to access remote areas such as the outer islands of the Coromandel.
Client Testimonial
Chris Bredenbeck, Regional Harbourmaster, expressed his satisfaction with the newest Harbour Master vessel. Chris noted that “having such a stable and capable platform as the Tūtaia significantly boosts our operational efficiency, particularly in maintaining our navigational aids across the region.”
